The tension between Young Thug and Gunna continues to leave fans puzzled, as Thugger’s latest social media message adds another cryptic layer to their already murky relationship.
On Monday, July 7, Young Thug posted a blunt message on X (formerly Twitter) aimed squarely at rappers with checkered legal reputations:
“If u a rapper and u a rat, u gotta just go gospel twin.”
The message, laced with sarcasm and street-coded shade, is just the latest in a string of comments Thug has made over the past year referencing “rats,” “snitches,” and other terms for those cooperating with law enforcement. While he didn’t drop names, the hip-hop world is reading between the lines—and many believe the shots are aimed at none other than Gunna.
Thug’s tweet comes just months after the release of his single “Money On Money” with Future, where the rat-related language is even more pointed.
“Brother, you a rat,” Thug raps.“Twin, you a rat, you smoked,” Future follows up.
Though no one is explicitly named in the lyrics, fans immediately connected the dots to Gunna especially given the fallout from the YSL RICO case, in which Gunna took an Alford plea in December 2022, effectively admitting no guilt but avoiding trial and securing his release from jail.
Ironically, when Thug was freed after entering a guilty plea during the same trial in late 2024, he had requested permission to communicate and collaborate with Gunna, who had long been considered his YSL protégé. The hip-hop community interpreted that as a sign of possible reconciliation.
But any hope of reunion was cast into doubt after Gunna was conspicuously absent from Thug’s 2023 album, Business Is Business.
That silence grew louder just last month, when Young Thug took the stage at the 2025 Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash. Performing the fan-favorite track “Ski”, which originally includes the lyric:
‘Bih got a backwood on her nightstand, she must be fkin’ with Gunna,”
Thug made a bold statement by muting Gunna’s name in the backing track and avoiding the line altogether during the performance.Thug has publicly distanced himself from Gunna following his plea deal in 2022.
