In an exclusive interview with SA Hip Hop Mag, legendary lyricist Zakwe sat down to discuss the artists who have shaped and continue to influence his career. The rapper, known for his masterful isiZulu flow, gave us an unfiltered look into his list of the top South African hip hop artists of all time. The list, which he later amended to include a notable omission, features a mix of pioneers, collaborators, and new-school titans.
Zakwe didn’t hesitate when naming the most important artist on his list: the late ProKid. He credits the Soweto legend as the one who truly opened the door for Zulu rappers. “The only reason I became big is because Pro had been doing it in vernacular,” Zakwe shared. He emphasized that ProKid was a pioneer who made people believe that rap in isiZulu was not only possible but also powerful. His influence, Zakwe says, laid the groundwork for a generation of artists to follow.
Zakwe’s list continues with artists he admires for their lyrical prowess and work ethic. Kwesta is mentioned as an artist who “pushes him to step up” whenever they collaborate, while K.O and Reason are celebrated for their consistent high-level output. He also made sure to highlight Cassper Nyovest, an artist he feels is often overlooked. Zakwe believes that many people miss Cassper’s undeniable skill in the studio, maybe because they don’t like his music or his persona. “He really steps up in the booth,” Zakwe stated, urging people to pay closer attention to Cassper’s lyrical ability.
The list also includes artists with whom Zakwe shares a deep connection, both professionally and personally. He named Duncan, Big Zulu, and Beast—all frequent collaborators and fellow purveyors of isiZulu rap—as essential figures in the game. He also gave a nod to the new school, listing Touchline and Maraza for their undeniable talent and unique styles.
Zakwe finished his initial list by adding A-Reece, acknowledging the Pretoria-born rapper’s significant impact on the modern SA Hip Hop landscape.
After a moment of reflection, Zakwe realized he had forgotten a key figure, someone he considers to be one of the best to ever do it. He quickly added Stogie T to his list, recognizing the veteran artist’s legendary status and his role as a “blueprint” for many rappers who came after him.
Zakwe’s top 10 list offers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a hip hop veteran. It’s a tribute not just to the artists who sell records, but to the ones who have consistently pushed the culture forward, inspired others, and proven their worth in the booth.
